DiMaggio touches home after hitting a home run for the Seals, one of 74 he hit while in San Francisco
On this day 78 years ago the New York Yankees obtained Joe DiMaggio from the minor league San Francisco Seals for $50,000. During DiMaggio’s 1933 campaign with the Seals he recorded 259 hits, 45 doubles, 13 triples, and 28 home runs with a .340 batting average. He also hit safely in 61 straight games, a foreshadowing of his later milestone with the Yankees. In 1934 The Clipper upped his batting average to .341 and by the end of the 1935 season with the seals was batting .398 with a .672 slugging average. Not coincidentally, ’35 would be his last season in the minors.
