Munson in 1970 (Ebay)

On this day 42 years ago, Thurman Munson was named the American League Rookie of the Year in a near unanimous, 23-1 vote over Cleveland’s Roy Foster.  Behind the plate he committed only 8 errors with a fielding percentage of .989.  He also threw out 52% of base-stealers, while making 80 assists.  At the plate, his .302 batting average was the best on the team among regulars.  1970 was a foreshadowing of Munson’s later greatness in a career that was tragically cut short.
