Bill Dickey | World Series Game 5 | vs. St. Louis Cardinals | 10/11/1943

The boys in pinstripes carried a 3-1 series lead into Sportsman’s Park in St. Louis, just 27 outs away from their 10th crown.  The Yanks’ Spud Chandler and his counterpart, Mort Cooper, pitched shutout ball through 5 innings, but in the top of the 6th the Cardinal hurler flinched.  Left fielder Charlie Keller drilled a seemingly harmless 2 out single to right field, bringing Bill Dickey to the plate.  In the final game of his postseason career, Dickey struck the deciding blow of the series into the seats in deep right field.  Chandler would make sure the lead would stand, earning his second win of the series, in a 2-0 victory.
