The Yanks celebrate their latest of 9,862 wins, a game 1 ALDS win in Baltimore (Associated Press)

In the 109 year history of the New York Yankees they have compiled a record of 9,862–7,493 from 1903-2012. The number of wins the boys from the Bronx have accumulated is not particulary impressive when you consider that seven other teams have higher win totals:

Team | Inaugural Year | Win Total

  1. San Francisco Giants | 1883 | 10,616
  2. Chicago Cubs | 1876 | 10,372
  3. Los Angeles Dodgers | 1884 | 10,303
  4. St. Louis Cardinals | 1882 | 10,283
  5. Atlanta Braves | 1876 | 10,128
  6. Cincinnati Reds | 1882 | 10,091
  7. Pittsburgh Pirates | 1882 | 9,961

What sets the Yanks apart from these venerable clubs is their all-time winning percentage: .568.  It’s the highest winning percentage of any team in the history of baseball by a wide margin. The next closest team is the San Francisco Giants with .538, a full thirty points lower.  Still not impressed?  Let’s put it this way: the Yankees could go 0-162 for the next 5 seasons and still have a higher winning percentage than their former crosstown rivals.
