Stengel had many funny moments. Perhaps the funniest for me was when he and Mantle appeared before Congress. Stengel went on and on–sentences not matching as usual, and the politicians couldn’t stop laughing. When Stengel finally finished speaking an hour later, they then asked Mantle what he thought. He said, “I guess I pretty much agree with Casey.” The place exploded in uncontrollable laughter, unlike anything that has happened in Congress before or since.

Have you seen video of that? I hope you have because it is straight comedy. Stengel has one particular run-on sentence that leaves several of the congressman pretty baffled. He was one of a kind. Hey thanks for checking out the blog man. Glad you’re enjoying it. Hopefully CC can pull through for us tonight.

No–I looked for it in YouTube, but only found a short audio. I read the transcript in Creamer’s biography of Stengel. Would love to find the video clip.

I’ll see if I can track down where I saw it. It may have been in his Yankeeography.

I found an audio clip of a part of the proceedings. So funny.
