#34 Greatest HR in Yankee History

October 17, 2012

Gehrig (George Burke)

Lou Gehrig | 3rd 3 HR Game | vs. Philadelphia Athletics | 5/22/1930

In a 20-13 slugfest, the Yanks reeled off 7 runs in the 1st inning, then took a 9-0 lead only to see the A’s tie the game at 12 after a 5-run 6th.  The Yanks tacked on 8 more runs over the final 3 innings, including a 5-run 9th, to win a wild game in Shibe Park.  The Yanks held off their Philly foes thank to 3 home runs and 8 RBIs off the bat of their indomitable 1st baseman, Lou Gehrig.  It was the Iron Horse’s 3rd time accomplishing the feat, the first player to do so.  He would hit 4 home runs in a game in Shibe Park 2 years later.
