With a 480 foot blast off of Detroit’s Tommy Bridges, Ruth realized one of his career milestones by hitting his 700th home run.  It was only the 14th home run of the season for the declining “Sultan,” but at a time when Lou Gehrig and Rogers Hornsby were the only players with 300 home runs, it was an awe-inspiring accomplishment.  The swat helped the Bombers win 4-2 at Navin Field to move a 1/2 game ahead of Detroit in the pennant race.
