Joe Girardi and John Wetteland celebrate the 1st Yankee title since 1978 (Sports Illustrated)

During the 1996 World Series the Yankees were outhit, out-homered, and outscored by the Atlanta Braves.  And won.  They scored just a single run through the first 2 games of the series, but a gritty comeback in game 4, punctuated by a Jim Leyritz 3-run homer in the 8th, served notice that they would not go quietly.  They won 3 straight in Fulton County Stadium to send the series back to the Bronx where the Bombers wrapped up their 23rd title.

1996 World Series Statistics

Team | H | HR | R

Atlanta Braves | 51 | 4 | 26

New York Yankees | 43 | 2 | 18
