On this day 52 years ago, Roger Maris, in his first season in pinstripes, edged Mickey Mantle in the American League MVP voting, 225-222, despite missing 18 games after a collision at second base.  Mantle had more first place votes than Maris (10-8), but 3 sportswriters mysteriously left the Mick off of their ballots entirely.
