Richardson

While Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris stole most of the headlines, Bobby Richardson was an essential cog in the Yankee machine during the 1950s and 60s.  In 1962 Richardson dug into the batter’s box 754 times and, despite leading the league in plate appearances, struck out just 24 times or 3.1% of the time.  In his career he went down on strikes just 243 times in 5780 plate appearances–just 4.2% of the time.
