Allie Reynolds, who pitched for the Yankees from 1947-1954, was known for being incredibly tense the day he pitched.  Chuck Dressen, a Yankee coach at the time, had a solution.  He decided to give Reynolds a shot of brandy as he warmed up, another when the game started, and a third in the 3rd inning, the goal being to loosen him up a bit.  “Superchief,” who did not like to drink, could barely stand up by the 3rd inning.
