9/16/51 | Mantle faces Feller in the 1st inning of a 6-1 Yankee win (Corbis)

During Bob Feller’s 18 years in Cleveland he won 266 games, struck out 2,581, won 20 games 6 times, including 27 in 1940, and led the Indians to the pennant in 1954, assuring him of a place in Cooperstown.  Perhaps the only thing “The Heater from Van Meter” could not do consistently well was get Mickey Mantle out.  The Mick had a lifetime .500 average against the flame-throwing righty.
