On this day 73 years ago Lou Gehrig was elected to the Hall of Fame during a special election at the winter meetings in Cincinnati.  Gehrig had announced his retirement earlier that summer due to his terminal illness, and many felt that he was deserving of admission while he could enjoy it.  He remains the only active player to be elected into baseball’s exclusive fraternity.
